Channelview ISD Celebrates National Literacy Month with a Focus on Lifelong Learning and
Literacy Enrichment
September 28, 2023 — In honor of National Literacy Month, Channelview Independent School
District (CISD) is delighted to announce a series of initiatives to promote literacy and instill a
lifelong love for reading among its staff and the wider community. Through a combination of
adult lending libraries, community little libraries, and dedicated literacy programs, CISD is
committed to fostering a culture of literacy that benefits learners of all ages.
CISD's dedication to literacy extends throughout its campuses, where each school now contains an adult lending library. These libraries are specifically curated to cater to the reading interests of educators and staff, serving as a source of inspiration and knowledge. We aim to encourage reading among our educators, recognizing that their passion for books will undoubtedly inspire their students.
Additionally, CISD has taken steps to replenish and support community little libraries, ensuring
that these accessible resources continue to be a valuable asset for residents of Channelview.
These little libraries, scattered throughout our community, offer free access to a wide range of
books, providing opportunities for individuals of all ages to engage in reading and learning.
Throughout the month of September, CISD's early literacy educators have been hard at work,
raising awareness about the critical role of literacy in a child's development. The district
implemented a dedicated phonics program to support the literacy development of our young
scholars. By focusing on foundational skills, we aim to equip our students with the essential
tools to become proficient readers and learners.
Furthermore, CISD offered a series of Literacy Level Up Workshops during the month, covering
various literacy-related topics with a particular focus on early childhood literacy. These sessions served as valuable resources for educators and learners, providing insights and strategies to enhance literacy instruction and support reading success.
LaKeisha LeBlanc, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, emphasized the
importance of literacy, stating, "Education is progress, and literacy is its cornerstone. Through
our collective efforts, we build a brighter future. Literacy unlocks knowledge, empowers
expression, and drives positive change. At Channelview ISD, we nurture young minds, fostering
a lifelong love for reading on their educational journey and beyond."
In addition to these initiatives, Channelview ISD campuses actively engage students in various
activities to promote reading. These activities include reading challenges, book clubs, author
visits, and interactive storytelling sessions, creating an environment where reading is not just a
skill but a joyful experience.
Dr. Tory C. Hill, Superintendent of Channelview ISD, expressed the district's commitment to
literacy: "At CISD, we believe that literacy is the foundation upon which all learning is built.
National Literacy Month provides us a wonderful opportunity to reinforce our dedication to
literacy and inspire a lifelong love for reading among our students, staff, and the broader
community."
As National Literacy Month draws to a close, Channelview ISD remains steadfast in its mission
to empower individuals with the gift of literacy, recognizing that it is the key to unlocking a world
of knowledge, imagination, and opportunity.
