Channelview ISD Students and Advocates Head to Austin to Champion Public Education
Friday, February 21, – A dedicated group of Channelview ISD students, parents, teachers, and district administrators traveled to Austin, where they engaged in meaningful discussions with local elected officials about the future of public education.
For students, this trip was a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the legislative process. They presented their own bill ideas, learning how policies are shaped and how their voices can impact the future of education in Texas. Through this experience, students deepened their understanding of civic engagement while developing critical advocacy and leadership skills.
For parents, teachers, and district administrators, the trip represented a commitment to championing public education. As part of an advocacy group, they met with legislators to discuss key issues affecting schools and students, ensuring that the needs of Channelview ISD and public education remained at the forefront of state discussions.
The group departed Channelview at 5:30 a.m. and spent the entire day at the Capitol, meeting with lawmakers, touring the historic building, and witnessing the legislative process in action.
"Providing our students with a front-row seat to the legislative process empowers them to be active participants in shaping their future," said Superintendent Dr. Tory C. Hill. "In tandem, our parents, teachers, and leaders are committed to advocating for policies that support and strengthen our schools. There are so many great things happening in public education, and it’s important to share that message—especially at such a crucial time for the future of our schools."
This initiative underscores Channelview ISD’s dedication to fostering student engagement, supporting educators, and ensuring a strong future for public education.
